National Advisory Board

CELL's National Advisory Board is a distinguished panel of leading educators from throughout the United States. The Board provides strategic counsel to broaden CELL's perspective, while providing national expertise that will benefit the work of the University of Indianapolis and educators throughout Indiana.

Peter H. Gerber, National Advisory Board Chairman
Founding Partner, The EdDesigns Group
[biography]

A founding partner of the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida-based EdDesigns Group (EDG), Pete Gerber is Senior Advisor of Young Audiences and Special Advisor to the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education. He was the founding executive director of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Education Foundation and founder-advisor of the South Florida Annenberg Challenge. He also served as the first education program director of The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and was the first staff director for the National Council on Education Research, a federal policy board. He held senior staff positions at the U.S. Office of Educational Research and Improvement and played a leading staff role in the National Commission on Excellence in Education that issued A Nation at Risk in 1983. He held faculty and administrative positions at Kauai Community College and the Washington-Baltimore Campus of Antioch College.

Joe Aguerrebere, President
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Dr. Joe Aguerrebere is the president of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Prior to joining NBPTS, Dr. Aguerrebere was employed at the Ford Foundation as a deputy director in charge of education grants. Throughout his 30 years in education, he has been a teacher and a principal.

Charles Coble, Partner
Third Mile Group

Dr. Charles Coble is a partner in The Third Mile Group. Prior to this position, Dr. Coble served as the executive director and then vice president for policy studies and projects at the Education Commission of the States (ECS). He was also the dean of the School of Education at East Carolina University for thirteen years. In this position, Dr. Coble led a number of projects that made great strides in education, including the professional development center that houses the North Carolina Education Research Team.

Joyce Johnstone, Professional Specialist, Director
Ryan ACE Chair, University of Notre Dame

Dr. Joyce Johnstone is the ryan director of ACE (Alliance for Catholic Education) Educational Outreach at the University of Notre Dame. ACE Educational Outreach is a two-year program that gives education graduates the opportunities to teach in impoverished Catholic schools throughout the southern United States.

Kent McGuire, Dean
College of Education, Temple University
[biography]

Dr. Kent McGuire was appointed dean of the School of Education at Temple University in the summer of 2003. Previous positions held by Dr. McGuire include senior vice president of the Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education during the Clinton administration, and education program director for Lilly Endowment. Dr. McGuire's current research interests focus on the areas of education administration and policy and organizational change.

Arturo Pacheco, Director
Center for Research in Education Reform, University of Texas at El Paso
[biography]

Dr. Arturo Pacheco is based at the University of Texas at El Paso where he is the director of the Center for Research on Education Reform. Also, Dr. Pacheco is the El Paso Electric Company Professor of Education Research. He was the dean of the College of Education for 10 years before taking this position. Dr. Pacheco is the co-author of Center of Pedagogy: New Structures for Educational Renewal and a number of articles and chapters on education reform.

Sharon P. Robinson, President and Chief Executive Officer
American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education
[biography]

Dr. Sharon P. Robinson currently serves as president and chief executive officer of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) in Washington, D.C. She is former president of the Educational Testing Services Educational Policy Leadership Institute. Before joining ETS, Robinson was assistant secretary of education with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement. She also held a variety of leadership positions at the National Education Association, including director of the National Center for Innovation, and she recently served as interim deputy director of the National PTA's Programs and Legislation office.
