Students Discuss Leadership at Arsenal Tech

New Tech High @ Arsenal Tech recently hosted a student leadership conference for its entire student body. Teachers, administrators, school partners, and 103 students participated in a series of student-centered workshops and forums to improve the small school.

The student leadership conference launched the school's second semester. The school's administration set aside a full day of instruction for all students to develop their leadership skills and explore their unique roles within New Tech High. Students participated in activities to determine leadership and learning styles. Student-led discussions addressed student experiences, academic needs and ways to improve the school, as well as strengths that currently exist. Students also discussed academic feedback and its impact on their learning. The group developed feedback agreements, which will be used to build a healthy and equitable school culture for New Tech High @ Arsenal Tech.

The school's administration appointed a new Student Advisory Group made of up 12 freshmen and sophomores to ensure that the work of the conference will be implemented within the school. The students meet weekly to discuss student interests and concerns and to provide feedback based on their peers' thoughts and opinions. These students now are being trained to become facilitators for classroom discussions and forums.

Because of the leadership conference, students are more vested in the success of their school. They have learned new information about their own skills and are putting this information into practice by serving as student leaders. The administrators and teachers now have a new understanding of students’ thoughts and ideas and have new ways of interacting with their classes.

Based on the success of the first student leadership conference, the school has committed to hosting the event annually for its student body.
