Bloomington New Tech High Chronicles School Plans Online

Bloomington New Tech High, which will open in August, has created a blog to engage the community and answer questions about the new school. Principal Alan Veach and English facilitator Drew Schrader use the site to post school announcements, answer readers' questions and interact with those interested in the New Technology High School model.

The site, newtechbloomington.blogspot.com, recently welcomed the inaugural freshman class. Through successful recruiting efforts among eighth-grade students, nearly all of the 100 school openings have been filled, allowing all students who applied to attend the school.

Bloomington New Tech staff are participating in a series of professional development meetings focused on a variety of topics ranging from logistics to teambuilding. The professional development opportunities are helping the staff to develop curricula for the school. Teachers are presenting project proposals to the team and evaluating the proposals using the Critical Friends Group protocols developed by the National School Reform Faculty. Professional development will continue throughout the spring and summer to prepare staff for the school's opening.

Bloomington New Tech will be housed in the former Rogers Building Supplies store, a building independent of the existing high schools of the Monroe County Community School Corporation. The school board recently approved the purchase of the 25,000 square foot building and the surrounding two acres to house the new school.
