For just $1, schools can purchase computers to be reassigned to students for use in schools. Net Literacy (www.netliteracy.org) is working with the United Way of Central Indiana, the State of Indiana and schools to increase the number of computers available to students on free or reduced cost lunch programs that do not have a computer.
As part of the Net Literacy program, schools pay Indiana Surplus $1 per computer. Net Literacy then pays to have the computers delivered to the school, provides the school with repurposing equipment and CDs, and provides additional support as required. Students repurpose the computers for community service hours, learn leadership and responsibility skills, have a compelling activity for their resume, and provide a service for their classmates and community. Students participating in Net Literacy programs also may be eligible for scholarships from IUPUI.
